April 19, 1866: African American citizens of Washington, D.C. celebrate the abolition of slavery. 4,000 to 5,000 people assembled on Franklin Square and marched to the White House, where they were addressed by President Andrew Johnson. Led by two black regiments, they marched past 10,000 cheering spectators. A sign on top of the speaker's platform read: "We have received our civil rights. Give us the right of suffrage and the work is done."

HERE'S HOW YOU CAN CELEBRATE DCED

1.CHECK OUT OTHER EMANCIPATION DAY EVENTS complied by the D.C. Mayor's Office

Events | emancipation (dc.gov)

2. LEARN THE HISTORY:  On April 16, 1882, while the Civil War still raged, President Abraham Lincoln signed into law the Compensated Emancipation Act.  It released 3,100 enslaved persons held in forced servitude and abolished slavery in the District of Columbia.  Each slaveholder was paid up to $300 per enslaved person.  This law struck a mighty blow against American slavery.  The Emancipation Proclamation to abolish slavery across the nation, came nine months later.

D.C. Emancipation Day was the most important annual observance in the African-American community in Washington, exceeding the 4th of July, Christmas and New Year holidays until the early 1900's when the annual parade down Pennsylvania Avenue stopped.

Through the research of Mrs. Hanes and her inspiration, the modern day parade was re-enacted by activists, Henry "Tabu" Taylor, Karen Shulgate and Ayo Handy-Kendi, who marched Pennsylvania Avenue dressed in period costume to honor this historical event.

3.Although a federal holiday in the District was initiated into law on Jan 4, 2005, and federal workers get a paid legal holiday, many still do not know the real history of this celebration. Be empowered - know thy history.

4. Show appreciation to the unsung heroes of this commemoration - the Enslaved.  Honor their sacrifices and their lives.

5. To ensure their legacy and the legacy of Mrs. Hanes, an ad hoc group formed in the '80's - Friends of D.C. Emancipation (FDCED) and continue to compile community calendars, hold wreath ceremonies, commemorative events and to hold the City government accountable for celebrating this day as Mrs. Hanes envisioned.

 6. Be creative in honoring this rich history and honoring the contributions of those who served.

7.  While D.C. 's enslaved were the first freed in this country, the District of Columbia is "still not free" because they have no statehood voting rights.  Join in this on-going effort to truly "free D.C., through Statehood now".
